Wednesday Night Sailing on Monterey Bay

Print Friendly

From the onset of Daylight Savings Time to the last Wednesday in September multiple fleets of sail boats race on Monterey Bay.

Crews begin showing up at the docks at 5PM, and the boats have to be on the starting line at 6PM when the first fleet, the Shields, drive into action.

The races are clearly visible from the shore.  Best viewing is on the waterfront  patios of the Monterey Plaza Hotel.  It is exciting and colorful to watch the boats round the windward mark and deploy their spinnakers for the downwind leg.

Races are sponsored by the Monterey Peninsula Yacht Club, an active sponsor of races since its founding in 1953.  This friendly club does not require boat ownership to join.  Besides racing the club sponsors a broad program of junior sailing, a cruising club, dining and numerous fun social events.

Aboard our boat, Athena, a 36’ sloop, we mix it up with the racing fleets every Wed. just to get on the water and to placate our nostalgia for races past.
